Does anyone know if a provisional licence holder can insure a car as the main driver? And then have a full uk licence holder as a named driver? The named driver has points and the provisional holder has not, this is a bid to avoid paying full insurance prices for the full licence holder. I say this is not legal or will not be proccessed by insurance company, they say this is correct to do. Anyone clued up on this?

Hi, if you are considering this and the named driver is going to actually be the main driver then this is 'fronting' and is not allowed however if you manage to get away with it there is always the risk that in the event of a claim they will investigate.0

How old is the provisional driver?
Have you considered that the premium for a newbie driver may well be £000's?0 -
Allowed, however most on-line systems won't let you do it so you'd have to go through a broker0

This i s not myself, my sons girlfriends sister and her boyfriend are cosidering this, i never dreamt this would be allowed. Not sure of ages early 20's at most.0

Why would it not be allowed? They can own a car, drive it on the road (with a suitable passenger) & have it stolen. Obviously the premiums might make it pointless. Although, as Keith1950 said, if the named driver is intending on actually being the main driver then its "frounting" and fraud0

Yeah i know they can own it etc, but what you said about fronting is just what they intend to do, which is why i thot this
Would not be allowed, i just never knew the term for it.
Thanks for clearing things up everyone. Every day is a school day0 -
Anyone with a valid license can be the policyholder and likewise anyone a named driver (though individual insurers may choose otherwise).
The person who drives the vehicle the most must be declared as the main driver, failure to do so can be considered fronting and will invalidate the insurance.
The "challenge" is that most insurers online systems defaults the policyholder as the main driver and gives you no option to change that.0 -
Yes they can - but the provisional licence holder will have no bonus and they will still have to declare that the named driver has points. If they don't then they are committing fraud, by with-holding material facts in an endeavour to achieve cheaper insurance.
Other thing is that some insurers will not cover a vehicle that does not belong to the insured and those that do will ask some very pertinent questions!
The provisional licence holder will not be able to have an "any driver policy" so the points holder will have to come clean!0 -
I am the named driver on our policy but I am also down as the main driver, we use the hubby's 10 years no claims to bring the costs down. Years back when he had points, I was also the main driver as the learner.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
30lb lost of 30lb by June 2012 :j:j:j (80lb overall goal)0
