How about something you can do together - I know that when I spend time with my girls it's as good as an expensive present - probably better! Maybe an 'experience' thing as someone has suggested, have a look on Groupon, there are a few good deals to be had now.0

How about a photo session with his daughter and his Grandchildren?0

I would suggest this too - my work colleague booked a flying lesson for her Dad's birthday, it was one of the best-received pressies he was ever given.

Although a Life Book is a good idea, they're usually more appreciated by 60/70/80 year olds. I second the Experience gift..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

We recently bought a friend of ours a cookery day for his 50th birthday. He's so excited about it! I'd echo an experience gift.Bern :j0

As your dad has no need for much, a sentimental gift would be more appreciated. I Like the book idea as you cant just go and buy a book about your life. I suggest leaving empty pages at the back as well to add photos of his big 50! You could get two books, one full of just photos, and one for family and friends comments and 50th birthday wishes.
Or as he is quite a gadget man how about a didgital photo frame, that way he can add extra photos/remove photos etc.
Good luck with the book!0 -

So even though I would never spend more than around £20 for a gift usually I fear my £100 will be lost on something that isnt really special.
Any advice? Thanks
If you have some old family picture of him with his parents and siblings, why don't you try to re-enact that picture with your own family. Then you post-edit the picture to give it a nice effect. For example, the "vintage look" Sepia is very easy to do in many picture editing applications and looks really elegant. You can print it as a poster or canvas, (with £100 you can even get a Nielsen frame) http://fotoinsight.co.uk/posters-canvas.html and maybe add the old picture as a small frame in Collage style.

You don't have much time for this, but how about doing his family tree?"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
