Vista Home Basic is cutting corners and the processor isn't up to much.
Not bad for word processing but it won't be capiable of much more.
This is much much better value for only £100 more:

with integrated graphics and a pretty old cpu it will run like a dog with the bloated beast that is vista not to mention about a dozen other apps that will probably have installed by default.
the 1gig ram is decent but nothing special, i would keep checking for hot deals, there is going to be a lot of lower spec laptops which aint up to running vista sold off cheap though it hasnt stoped tesco uping the ram and pretending it is upto the job.
i know its over your price but the best option i found with a quick look was this

you would be best adding anouther 512meg ram for say £30 but it will be propper fast and though the graphics are integrated the coreduo boards will have the latest intel chipsets and gpus0
