Washing Machine install driving me mad

Bought a New Machine as was going to be £200+ to fix and was over 5 years old. Makes me sad as my first one lasted 16 years (with repairs).
Decided to pay to get it installed as it was a package, take the old one away etc. Anyway guys arrived today. Very pleasant. However, having taken old one out, the guy announces that he can't install the new one as the waste pipe is not long enough. Old one was as the waste outlet on the old machine was on the left this one is on the right and hence further from under the sink. He tells me I will need to go to B and Q for a waste extension kit. They then leave - now machine is in middle of floor. Hubby returns home, goes to B and Q, Homebase, Wick - all ssy the same haven't heard waste pipe extension kit. So question 1 Was the installation guy making it up so he could escape 2. Where do you buy such kits? and 3. Should I be able to get my installation money back. Shop never asked any questions about distance to sink or currect outlet pipe.

I'd definitely ask for your money back. Shouldn't be too hard to sort out though. Your local DIY shop should have a selection of waste pipe parts - it should just be a case of selecting the right ones to get the configuration you need.

Ruski. We have bits that look like what you are suggesting but. The Drain Hose we bought has different size openings at either end. So we had joined the drain hose from the washing machine with the drain hose we bought (both small ends). But now we are left with the fat end of the bought drain hose whereas previously we had a thin end from old washing machine to fit on to bit under sink. Is the hose connector you were suggesting the same size at either end?

Very good question - but the last time I did this for a customer I can't remember having any problems with either the join or the connection to the spigot under the sink (with a jubilee to be sure) - I haven't got one to hand so I can't answer your q directly as have a memory like a errr... what is it?!?
If you can do - have a look at one from a screwfix trade counter - they'll quite happily pick you one to have a look at, or toolstation or wickes or B&poo or any other outlet you can think of before I get slammed for promoting one over another!

Is the bit under the sink not a dual size spigot then?
  • Thankyou Ruski. It was so kind of you to help us. The connector bit you told us about we used to join the two drain tubes which is behind the dish washer and it has been no problem no leaks. Bit under the sink was a bit more of a make it fit job but being under the sink we can keep an eye on it. Did need a tightning as was a bit drippy. Seems ok now though. I think we might replace the whole junction bit under the sink - but that will be a 2012 job. Washing Machine has now been on 3 times and I only have another 7 loads to go !!! (Hubby says do you not do housecalls.)
  • Not being very sure of my spigcots is probably part of the problem !!! Sorry see it is Spigots !!!

Surely the installation guys have come across this before? Did you get the installation fee refunded?

Yes - I do do housecalls - but I'm trying to save you money here - not charge you money!!!! Yes - there are really tradesmen still out there who will give advice for free.... I work on a Karma principle :D
