Phone Number Problem

Hi All,
I bought a new house and got Sky Talk, Broadband and TV, which was a game in itself.
But the Telephone number I have been assigned, used to belong to a builder that apparently lives close and is is therefore on every free business listing site going.
I first rang Sky as I kept receiving phone calls asking for the same person, mainly from debt companies, which is obviously annoying being chased for debt that is not even yours. I asked if Sky could change our number as I was not bothered about receiving a new number as only a handful of people use it.
I was told by Sky that we could only have the number changed if we were getting threatening calls and it was logged by the police, even though I explained my problem. Or I could pay an additional £X a month to pay for call barring where I could bar up to ten phone numbers that I wanted. I am annoyed I have to pay for this as it is Sky's fault I have been assigned someone else's number who appears to be in trouble.
I thought if I contact the websites and ask them to remove the number it would stop, but I currently on the third page of Google of goodness knows how many pages of business directory sites which list my number under a building company.
What can I do as Sky are doing nothing to help and I am fed up of getting these calls?
Regards,
Gazumped

Can you escalate the problem within Sky? Annoy them as much as you are getting annoyed by the calls.
I don't suppose debt collectors will readily buy the story that you have nothing to do with the person owing the debt.
For the sake of half decent customer service, I agree that Sky should sort it and you should not incur extra costs. Whilst they were not to know that number had an associated problem, it was there from before they gave you the line, so if you can get to a more senior person, they would hopefully sort it out for you. Sorry I don't have any contact details for Sky, but maybe somebody here can point you in the right direction.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
