Insurance against uninsured drivers

Options
My husband just renewed his car insurance and agreed to add on insurance against uninsured drivers for an extra £20. He's now wondering if this is a waste of money. Any opinions?

  • And this insurance, if you have to claim, means that your primary insurance is not affected in any way ? I think not.

wast of money thats why the MIB exists
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Look at some other insurers as they do this for free! Have you tried the comparison sites? Good Luck :D

Should ask them but have you not already hiked the premium and added charges and tax that covers payments to the MIB
because of so many uninsured drivers.

  • You would need a better understanding of what the cover actually gives above and beyond either claiming from the MIB or what a standard motor policy gives.
  • yeah some companies now include this as standard

I guess it could offer a higher level of cover, so that needs to be checked whether it's worthwhile and what the consequences are (a claim on your own policy? loss of NCD? etc.)

Probably a waste of money. As long as an uninsured driver is identified and you report the accident to police you can claim your costs through the MIB. http://www.mib.org.uk/Customer+Services/en/Accidents+in+the+UK/Uninsured+Drivers+Agreement/Default.htm

If the driver can't be identified (perhaps they didn't stop) then the MIB will apply an excess to damage claims only (£600???). But I'd put money on your extra insurance not covering that situation.

You need to read the extra cover carefully to discover exactly what it is you are getting for your £20

Really don't know whether that's meant to be a joke, but they are not equivalent.
