Buying Vegetable Seeds

Options
I was thinking what to get my sister for Christmas and have finally decided to get her some vegetable seeds as she has decided she wants to start growing her own veg.

Typically of me I didn't think about doing this until the likes of Wilksinsons (where I usually buy my seeds from) stopped selling garden stuff and had Christmas stuff out on the shelves.

Where is the next best, cheapest place to buy veg seeds from? Also as she only has a small garden I need to buy her seeds that she can grow in pots.

Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

This is a great site and I use it regularly:

Many of the packets are 50p and they are in managable quantities :D

You could try Ebay, As you have already noted I get mine from Wilkinsons when they are 75& off.

As your sister only has a small garden and willbe growing in potsI would like to recommend the tomato Red Robin,it only growsabout 18" high and produces a busy plantjust loaded with lovely cherry tomatos. Also does very well onKitchen windsill. It is the only one I grow now and kept me in tomatos allsummer.Would also recommend a couple of pots of mixed salad leaves as quite expensive to buy by the bag.

  • I quite like http://www.moreveg.co.uk/ as they do some nice stuff and small packs so start from 50p. Also, check out their collections of seeds. .. Postage is 95p and nothing if you spend over £7.50 (it also says £6 somewhere on the site - check).

Have a look at T&M, Suttons and other big names - they often list seeds suitable for pots, usually called The Patio Collection or similar.

(Then see if you can buy them elsewhere for cheaper )

If time is an issue, garden centres still have a few seed stands, a lot of packets are now marked up on the front if they are suitable for pots/patios.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my post, timing hasn't been my greatest trait for this Christmas present and unfortunately had to go out to do my Christmas shopping before you all replied.

I ended up going to B&Q in the end. I was going to buy a couple of the packs of seeds that had a variety of veg in them but decided against this as a) some of them wouldn't have been able to have been grown in pots and b) wasn't sure whether she would actually eat some of the veg so in the end I just bought singular packets of seeds that I knew I couldn't go wrong with and bought things like tomato, carrot, parsnip, peppers, courgettes, peas, beans, salad leaves, radishes, chillies and a tray of three herbs. There were probably a couple more packets but can't think off the top of my head.

Was really pleased as my budget was £20.00 and it came to just under.

Will definitely keep this thread somewhere safe so as to refer to it in future when I want to buy some more veg seeds.

    Again, thank you everyone.
