Kitten's first vet visit!

Hi all just took our little Ozzy for his first trip to the vet. he is 9 weeks and just had his first vaccinations and also a flea treatment. He was given Advocate flea spot on treatment by the vet which smells horrible!! and the worm stuff is Profender spot on which we have to use in 2 days time after this flea stuff takes effect.
The vet also told us to start practising rubbing his gums and teeth in preperation for brushing them with cat toothpaste (which i didn't know existed!) when he's older. He said its good to get into practice now. he also clipped his little nails which he didn't like! overall hes been very good and is very sleepy. Poor little boy! i feel so guilty but its for his own good haha :)

Does anyone else use Advocate or Profender? it seems quite reasonably priced too which is good.

We use Profender. We haven't really noticed a smell but one thing I will say is to make sure you put it where he can't lick it - right on the back of his neck. It can have a strange effect on them if they lick it.

He'll sleep for about 24 hours after this vet treatment so make sure he's comfortable in a nice quiet area. He'll either go to his litter tray or food bowls when he gets up.

That's a good idea about the tooth brushing. Ours lost 10 teeth about 6 years ago to gingivitis which she'd had since birth. If we'd been brushing her teeth we may have avoided having to put her through that.
  • Yes we have always used advocate for our puss who is 14 months old and am pleased to say she has always been flea free. We get six months supply from the vet at a time and would much rather spend money on a good treatment then have fleas.

thanks for the replies so far :) it was the advocate that is smelly - i won't be using the profender until tuesday. I will definitely apply it so he can't lick it off, poor little thing. I have looked online and found advocate for £24 for 6 - the vet sold me 3 for £22 today so that will definitely save me money buying online - I just need to ask the vet for a prescription to get it online. He has been pretty good so far but has been trying to scratch where the advocate has been but he can't really reach it which is good!
  • The vet will charge you handsomely for the writing out of a prescription so it may not be much cheaper to buy this way.
I am pretty sue that Advocate treats for most ( not tape ) worms so am somewhat surprised that vet has given you Profender as well.
Also....just to confuse the issue.....many cat owners ( including myself ) believe that it really is not necessary to use these powerful drugs anywhere near as frequently as vets advise.
I currently have 6 cats all with outside access and apart from treating the kittens when they came to me with fleas, I have not used a flea treatment since. Oh, and I have a flea allergy myself so would know pretty quickly if we had any in the house.;)
I don't like the household sprays much either, but do give the house a good spray if I ever think someone has brought fleas home, but that might be once every 3 years.

when he's asleep or cuddling, start tickling his toes and touching his feet a lot, push on the top of his toes so his claw goes out, this way as he get used to them being touched and nothing horrible happening, he will not make such a fuss in the future.
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p

For cats, Advocate treats the common roundworm, heartworm & hookworm (when used monthly) as well as fleas & ear mites. Profender - made by the same company (Bayer) also treats a variety of tape worms, and less common roundworm. Perhaps the vet suspected a multiple parasite infection.
