Ditching Canvas and going it alone - Brittany

Hi all - any experiences would be welcome!
We normally go to France with Canvas Holidays, and this year want to got to Perros - this site(sorry about cheesy music on home page!)
Having checked prices, it seems that we'd save £300 going independently, even accounting for Brittany Ferries' horrific fares!:money:
I'm a bit scared though - never done it alone before
and wonder if we'd miss the security of a Canvas courier? Although last time, when I needed to go to hospital, I had to do the interpreting for him! We can get by in French pretty well, we think.
Has anyone any experience of accommodation standards in French campsites? Anything to watch out for before I go ahead and book?
Sorry for ramble - and thanks in advance

Gp to the SpeedFerries site to book cheap crossings.
We have been to many sites in France incuding the large chains such as Yelloh etc. We usuallyy use these as stop over sites since their facilities, prices, restaurant etc. are not as good as the privatley owned medium sized sites. They tend to be larger and have smaller pools, less pools etc than these smaller sites. Others people we have met also feel the same. Check out some of the non-chain sites.
We go with Haven since it is cheaper because we go out of holidays. If we went during school holidays we would go independant and book the crossing with Speed Ferries.0
