Car alarm query

My car alarm went off about 3 times last night. It was rather odd as it went off for ~10 seconds each time then stopped and then around an hour later it went off again.

Everything was locked up.... windows, doors, bonnet, luggage compartment.

I decided to take it for a drive after the 2nd time the alarm went off. I opened and shut all the windows, doors and the lugage compartment when I got back home. It went off again about 10-15 minutes later but the alarm has not gone off since.

I imagine that the battery is fine as it gave a loud beep when I deactivated the alarm and immobiliser with the key fob. The engine started first time.

Any ideas as to the possible cause? Could it be a fault with the alarm system? Car is a 1998 reg.

Thanks for your help.

might be usefull to post up what make and model car it is, and is it a factory fit alarm or aftermarket

it used to be a common scam for would be thieves to kick the car and set the alarm off and hide in the hedge, then after the owner gets fed up and switches it off , theyre free to steal from your car :(
  • An auto electrician once told me it is often easier to fit a new alarm than trace a fault. While i am sure this is not always the case,if it is the original alarm it could be coming to the end of its days.

On the other hand more than one car in our road has gone off on a few occasions, for no apparent reason, and then never done it again for months!!

  • My car alarm has not gone off since.

Yesterday I forced the alarm to go off by opening the drivers door with the key. Alarm went off good and proper. Quickly deactivated it with the key fob so as not to annoy the neighbours!

I think I will see how things go. If it starts doing it again I will see about getting it diagnosed at a garage.
