I thought what the bloke was saying was quite reasonable. He gave the same advice we give over on the MFW board - namely to build up an emergency fund of approx. 3 months worth of income in order to cover yourself for difficult times before embarking on a period of overpayments.

I didn't hear the original story of the home owner, but if he did put the life savings into the house and left no emergency cash fund, then it does seem reckless. I'm obviously all for paying down mortgage debt, but not at the cost of a person's wider financial security.

And there - in a pithy sentence - is the quintessential essence of modern Britain.

thanks ILW, that made me laugh.

I don't understand your point. ILW is correct, it is impossible to be in negative equity at the end of a repayment mortgage. Why does this make you laugh?

My favourite Martin quote, at 1:56:06

"I'm talking about the whingers, the people who used their home as, uh, some kind of gambling chip"

Glad to see some one agrees with me on the lunacy of STRing

As for the "car crash in slow motion" guy being a "property speculator", then unless he is spreadbetting on house price falls over the next year - he can't be much of a "speculator"

Glad to see the HPC lot show themselves up so blatantly

Seems to be a load of talk of STRing, Did more than a few dozen people actually do it?

apart from those where it was forced.

The founders of HPC have been advocating it for years. Have a listen to why Rhienhard and the HPC founder took their STR decision in 2003:

If you want to complain about the harsh way that folks suffering from Negative Equity were treated on this show, the link is here:

At the very least they should have had someone independent from RICS or the Land Registry on to opine on house prices, rather than vile litte Martin. Someone from the one of the debt counselling charities could also have been welcome to offer advice on dealing with problem mortgages, rather than this vile sneering pair of crashers

It seems to me that 0.000001% of the population did this STR thing, for something that hardly anyone knows about in the real world it gets a lot of air time on this board.
