Looking after leather?

Hi guys,
Bought a rather expensive and lavis pair of leather (calfskin) sneakers the other day and I was told by the man in the store to apply saddlesoap AFTER I get them wet in the rain..
Quick bit of Google research suggests saddlesoap is BAD for leather full stop and a colleague told me it's good, but to be applied BEFORE they get wet (i.e. asap).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Z

Can't you just use bees wax or shoe polish?
You could apply it before and after?
