I think that's an important point that many anti sharing people forget.

I spent my twenties sharing lovely family houses with separate living and dining rooms, nice kitchens and (usually) gardens, whereas the people who had managed to scrape together enough money to buy somewhere (which would have been the same as a 1 bed rented flat) had kitchenettes/kitchen corners, small rooms and little space.

I also agree that approaching the LL with a view to getting a sharer in would be likely to be met with success.
