when you say spongey, like squidgy, squelchy wet spongy or just spongey? is it an old house/lawn? if so its probably a build of thatch and moss which needs an areation and scarification most likly, bit late for it now though, weed wise they are just a type of dandilion so shouldnt be too hard to get rid of. or just ring your local greenthumb rep.

Cut, scarify (rake), aerate will deal with most broad leaf weeds and should improve things dramatically. If things are really bad then a 'weed feed and moss killer' will help.

You could see if green thumb or lawn doctor cover your area, previous topics on here recommened them and it seems they can treat the lawn for cheaper than you can buy the stuff yourself. Green thumb dont cover my area but lawn doctor did, they are more expensive I think, so far we have had one treatment and the lawn looks alot better.

    Hi,

a neighbour garden had weeds/nettles around 4 foot tall, we have managed to cut them off and have leveled the surface, but the weed roots still exist, is there anything we can put on the weeds to distroy them completely.

someone has said that we should use diesel, not the one used to run cars tho, we have no idea where to buy this from.

is there anything else we can do or use, maybe some thing stronger.

    thanks in advance

Only if you don't want to be able to grow anything on the land for many years to come!

Wait for the roots to send some leaves out and then spray with glyphosate.

A company like Greenthumb are apparantly able to use products that aren't available in the shops.

Whatever it was that they used on our entire lawn of Dock worked like absolute magic and it only took one treatment to get rid of most of them and there were a LOT and they were very well established - the only other way I'd managed to keep them at bay in another house was was regular mowing of the new lawn and then going and cutting as far down the root every time one popped up. The stuff that Green Thumb used affect the plants hormonally?? Causes them to grow like mad but really deformed for a few days then they just collapse. Never came back.

It wasn't particularly expensive, especially considering how expensive off the shelf weed killers are. I'm sure it was £16 for 100 square metres - might ave been more for the initial weed killer.

If you're going to put stuff on them yourself, you should do it when there are lots of leaves so there's plenty of surface area to absorb the stuff - I've not had much success with any weed killer from B&Q or whatever.

You could use a vegetable oil to give extra sticking power to glyphosate, but putting diesel of any kind on the land is a no-no and illegal too.

Maybe your friend was thinking of the brushwood killer SBK, which can be injected into holes bored in tree stumps and mixed with a little oil when used in that context.

My Dad had similar problems with his garden being full of weeds. He has used the lawn treatment company GreenThumb now for a while and has found it cheaper than buying the products himself and his lawn looks fantastic! You can visit their website Greenthumb.co.uk to see if they cover you area.

just found this from a page on the net

This recipe is very strong and will essentially kill the soil, and everything growing in it, wherever you apply it (including any beneficial microbes). It is not selective, meaning it will kill your ornamentals along with the weeds. If used heavily, you may have trouble growing new plants in areas where it's used unless you bring in some new soil. Don't use it on or near concrete or apply it on windy days. For best results, apply on a hot day and wait at least 24 hours after applying.
    Recipe:
    1. Mix 1 pound of salt with one gallon of white vinegar.
    2. Stir until the salt dissolves. 3. Mix in one teaspoon of liquid soap.

not sure if this helps, but this might save us even more money, im gonna try it next week as i will be getting some white vinegar of the weekend.

    hope this helps.
