Buying 1gb RAM

The IT technician in work kindly had a look at my home vista machine, mainly used by the kids, anyway it's not a laptop but a desk top and is v.slow.

He has suggested buying 2 x 1gb RAM cards DDR2-533 and kindly showed me where they go and how to change them.

Anyway I've checked online but the slot on the 512 card in my machine seems to be more towards the centre, than the 1gb cards in the photo.

Is the slot half way down the card always in the same place for the above card or do I need more info than what he wrote down before buying?

I suggest you go onto the Crucial website (select the UK as location) and select 'scan your system'. This downloads a bit of software that allows their site to check your pc configuration. It then shows what memory is suitable for your pc and a price for their product. They are a reputable company and I have used them many times.

    www.crucial.com

Even if you don't use them it will at least confirm what memory is appropraite for you.

So I can take it that the (serial?) number I wrote down doesn't necessarily mean the particular component will fit or not?
  • Providing your IT guy knows that DDR2 is the type of RAM you need, any will be fine. The RAM slots can be positioned anywhere on a motherboard so their position in a photo is irrelevant.

I think the position meant may be that of the small tab part way along the edge of the memory chip. This does change depending on memory type, so checking on crucial may be a good idea however all ddr2 "should" be the same.

Unless the OP is mixing up laptop and desktop ram.

It is a desktop machine, the IT bloke knows his stuff, he works for a firm and has been doing our machines and systems for years has helped loads out and we never have any grief.

He took the memory card out let me have a practice putting it back in etc, then wrote down the above numbers.

I am referring to the gap/tab that occurs approx half way along between the connecting teeth, by that I mean the edge that you actually push into the machine, as opposed to the edge you grab to take it out. (Sorry if am talking to you in halfwit non tekky terminology) and thanks for all your help!

Look here or here. Either will do, no need to spend more.
Does your machine have a brand name and model number?

Thanks, it's a packard bell there are loads of number on the back on the microsoft tab, one of which 6997210000.

Those you have linked look more like what I need replaced in terms of the gap, the other one I looked at on amazon had a gap very near one end.

The ones at which you were looking were SoDIMM, as opposed to DIMM(which is what you need).
    SoDIMM is for laptops.

Enter your serial number here to get your PC model details. There is also a link that contains information on how to find your serial number.
