This happened to me as well!!, had no idea my dd was on school action plan plus till her paeds kicked up a fuss about her schooling needs!!.
Its amazing how this is done, but as she will be going to big school next year not worth the fight i suppose :(
Also have no senco as school is so small/private, the head makes all the sen decisions.
Also, i didn't sign anything either, how bizarre -how bizarre!
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • I really feel for what you are going through and hope that you do manage to get a mutual understanding with school as it makes it so much easier when you are both working together.

My son is 6 and we had the worst time ever with his Reception year at school, he was put on action plus and saw an educational psychologist, speech and language therapist and was referred to CAMHS. When we went to the CAMHS my DS was perfectly behaved so he was discharged and I was referred onto a parenting programme.

I spent 6 weeks on the parenting programme and found it totally unhelpful.

My son has now being diagnosed on the autism spectrum and we moved him schools as he was struggling in a class of 30 children, he now only has 15 other children in his class. We have a really good relationship with school and he has a full statement for special education needs, he has come on so much in Year 1 and they are working hard with him so he can now express some of his feelings by talking rather than hitting or kicking others.
  • Ok went to CAMHS app...my fella of 8 years told the v nice ladies about a trip to a psychologist when he was 9 for similar probs at school??..failed to mention that to me beforehand, they asked what my main concerns where which was his behaviour at school the doc(who refered DS) had already given them a heads up that the school where less than helpful. The lady observing said she was seeing what she needed to imagination etc and said they would see what strategies the EP put in place at school and continue to collect information, I have been given a ccc-2 and CAST questionnaire to fill in and send back...never got to say what I wanted too because I got upset when they started asking about DS being invited to birthday parties etc and prob looked like the worse mother ever for getting upset while DS was in the room. Still none the wiser just going round in circles....keep feeling up then down all the time, feel like everyone is staring at me as though I am a crap mother, wish I could rewind to 2 years ago before all this rubbish started.

Write to them. Put down everything that was said (that was relevant), everything you wanted to say but got distracted from and what you understood the outcome of the meeting to be and ask all the questions that have arisen during and since but not been voiced etc.

Next time: write down all your questions and observations in two lists before the meeting, make sure you refer to it during the meeting and insist that you check your lists before agreeing to end the meeting (and ask them if they'd feel a copy would be helpful).

Having had a couple of dire meetings I find this strategy helps to keep the focus where it should be and lessens misunderstandings.

  • Hi, I'm back!

Wanted to update all you lovely, helpfull peeps :)

My little boy is doing fine at school now...seems much happier even though he will not discuss school even for a second!

Had a second meeting with EP who was not impressed about teacher not following her suggestions I believe her words were "I have my dr martins on and I will be kicking him in to touch!" and bless her she did :)) She has pretty much told me not to worry about the school side of things she has it covered and will back me 100%. She happily did a full cognitive assessment courtesy of the school funds also offered a home visit if I wished and the school would foot the bill! He came out as: high average-verbal comprehension, outstanding-perceptual reasoning, low average-working memory, and top low average-processing speed I'm still trying to work out what all this means as I haven't been given a written report. she said he is perfectly capable just needs motivating so she has added more strategies for that.

Also had a second appointment with CAMHS who had gathered information from myself, school, EP, and also from observation of my son and they have confirmed that he fits the triad of impairments for ASD :( so he has been placed on the waiting list for an assessment.

Mixed feelings about everything but to see my son back to his usual self is priceless :) now I just need to catch up on some lost sleep!

That's brilliant. I hope your assessment service doesn't have as long a waiting list as ours, which is about 12-15 months at present. You have to have had an assessment by an EP to see if you warrant an assessment by the pre-assessment panel to decide whether the ASD team will do an assessment!

DS2 has changed school since your last update and is also doing really well, far happier, and given what his 1:1 has since said about the policies in place at his old school I'm really not surprised! Their policy, knowing DS2 is hyposensitive and needs physical stimulation to keep him calm, was that if he started to kick off he had to be made to sit in a chair - the OT was speechless when I told her...

  • Hi Daska, Glad to hear your ds is doing well :), the lady from camhs said that she couldn't put an exact time limit on the waiting list as they have had a huge volume of referrals of late but she said hopefully it will be before the end of the year...but then she did mention waiting for Ds to settle into his new class after the summer hols before they did a school observation?? they have been quite quick so far with regards to appointments and I have a feeling that if they start dragging their feet the EP may have something to say because she is keeping his file open and will continue to visit the school :)

Can I ask you something? Do you have a peadiatrician(if thats even how I should spell it)?? from the start I had been advised by various people to go here...speak to such a such..but during the meeting with camhs she asked if we had a pead involved which we haven't, is this something I should of done from the start?? only it was the GP who referred us straight to camhs.
