I think the laws have changed recently, temporary staff are entitled to "no less" terms than permanent staff.
There are different benefits that apply depending on how long you have been there, but for instance, permanent staff here get £10 a day lunch allowance, free tea, coffee, canned drinks etc. and we legally have to offer temporary staff the same.
Not sure if it makes a difference that at your company staff are paying for lunch and then claiming it back, either way, seems a bit mean that your manager doesn't pay for you and claim it back.

The law changed on 1 October 2011.
There are some Day One rights, but pay is not affected until the completion of 12 weeks (and the time is not back-dated to start before 1 October).0
