  • The council are obligated to seal any gaps in external doors and windows to make then draught-free. Give them a call

You could also lightly tack old bike innertubes to exclude draughts and buying curtains at charity shops will mean savings on heating in the long run

    B. I can't afford warmer clothing, curtains, etc.

Have a look in charity shops for a few cheap layers of clothing. Doesn't have to be pretty if it's just to wear at home. I'm sitting here in five pairs of socks and that's with the heating on - typical girl - feet like blocks of ice.

Also keep an eye on Freecycle for anyone getting rid of old clothes/curtains - might be some freebies going in your area.

Although it's an initial spend, if you had an electric blanket they solve the cold overnight very well and are literally pennies to use a night.

My local charity shop has a 50p section and I got a load of old towels and 2 duvet covers , I stuffed the towels into the covers and now have 2 window / bed bolsters which has warmed things up no end.
I had some clothes that no longer fit so I made them into window draft excluders.
I found one curtain on freecycle ( as it was one and long no one wanted it) it now lives over my door.

Check freecycle and freegle for clothes and things you can make into something else and rugs etc
put an ad on both for wanted things

put ads for stuff on gumtree etc..it is free and you never know what might happen..someone might have something to gift and you might be cheaper then taking it to the tip.

Try to get cotton or wool if at all possible and wear gloves and hat when doing nothing round the flat.

Hot food twice a day if you can manage it, even if it is only porridge or beans it will help.

Speak to Shelter as they can tell you all of your rights as a council tenant and that might also help.
