Insurance on Provisional License on my own car

Options
Hi,

I have provisional license and I want to get insurance on a car I will buy soon. I want to practice well, before the driving test. Is it possible to get one?

    To get one what?
  • Yes you can. However, how you do this depends on your circumstances. You will need someone competent (usually over 21, have held a full UK licence for 2+ years and have no serious endorsements) to be in the car with you at any rate. You can be added as a provisional driver to most policies (say on a parent's car) and the additional premium for this is not usually too expensive. Or you can buy a secondary policy, such as this http://www.provisionalmarmalade.co.uk/ . Usually with the latter the owner's NCD will remain intact if you have an incident. I'm sure there are other methods, and certain that others will advise.

    Hope this helps. :)

marmalade don't normally let you insure unless the car has other insurance.

let you take out a policy as a learner, pay monthly, but they have an age limit, and won't cover you when you pass.
  • Or you can just hold your own insurance in your own name.

Be aware that when you pass your test your insurance will go up and it is worth asking the insurer what admin fees etc they will charge to make the change (they wont at this point be able to guarantee what the new premium will be but should be able to give you an indicative value)

Yes, I want to have my own insurance at the moment. And I want to pay monthly. After the practical test, I want to pay monthly as well.

I dont have anyone *permanently* with me, having full license and 3 yr experience. However, of-course, when I will drive, some one with same qualities will accompany me.

Do you have any suggestion, which company will be helpful in this matter?

Btw, I think, one needs to accompany a person having 3 yrs of exp (not 2 yrs), while driving on provisional license?

I looked at that for my daughter and the thought of paying all that money for a policy that may end in a few months made me think
    again.

As soon as you pass the policy is cancelled and the costs for a new drivers is eye wateringly expensive.

That sort of money pays for a lot of driving lessons.

  • Thanks,

    So what you suggest then?
Should I take more and more lessons, which are really expensive!

I was thinking to insure my own car, do a lot of practice, and then after the test, Can shift to some other insurance company. I have a 6 yrs no-claim certificate on my International license as well.

    Much Appreciated!
  • Micky,
I am located in SO16 3BA, and "collingwoodlearners" do not cover this area for insurance.
    Any other company?
