Small hairline cracks in plaster on walls

Options
Hi just starting some decorating. We have some small hairline cracks on some plaster walls. Someone told me to forget the expensive fillers and use tile cement (I assume they meant wall tile adhesive). Anyone have any experience of this and does it work?

Previosuly walls have been wallpapered but never painted. Just the grey plater on the walls.

Thanks.

I've not used it on walls proper, but have used it on ceiling cracks and at the junction between walls and ceilings. It worked well because it grabs. It was actually a plasterer who suggested using it.

i take it , this someone wasn't a decorator - if you have hairline cracks use a fine surface filler

Pollifilla powder isn't expensive. If you use tile adhesive, bear in mind it's water-proof and will show a different colour if you're painting. It doesn't rub down as well as a plaster filler.
Yes, I usually tell it as I see it and respond where I see the need, but never are my comments ment to be taken personally.

Easi-fill works well. Tetrion is said to be good. Both are powders, which you mix with water, apply, let dry and sand. These powder fillers are easier to sand than ready mixed ones, and much cheaper.

  • It was a builder that told me about tile cement... The general feeling was that all fillers would crack again and that tile cement would not.
  • My father in law usually suggests powdered cove adhesive which Ive used for large ceiling cracks covered in mesh scrim tape first with reasonable results.
