No gas brrrrrr!

A contractor for Scottish Gas Network arrived this morning at 08:00hrs to replace the supply pipe into the building which is a block of dwelling flats. At 16:00hrs we were told that they had underestimated the time required to carry out the works and would return tomorrow. I questioned this decision asking that they remain for as long as it takes to complete the job given the sub zero temperatures and the fact that eveyone in the building relies on gas for heating. The reply was "we cant work in the dark, its too dangerous" and when I suggested portable lighting he simply said it was too late to arrange this.

After suggesting that maybe their company was not suited to this type of work, especially given that they claim to provide a 24hr service for gas emergencies I contacted Scottish Gas Networks. I spoke with a very nice lady who sympathised with my position and after some discussion agreed to send out some temporary heaters.

Basically am I being unreasonable expecting some form of contingency arrangements from the gas supplier?

Mains replacement engineers are not the same engineers that deal with gas emergencies. Also if it is relay or replacement after an emergency again it is a different engineer that deals with such.

It's reasonable for you to expect some assistance in this instance and it is reasonable of the company to offer temporary heaters. I really hope they get the supply sorted tomorrow for you.
