Returning faulty kettle after 2 years

My Philips One-Cup kettle has recently developed a leak, I bought it from Argos in August 2009. I still have the receipt (amazingly!) - can I go back to the store and get a replacement?
My father-in-law recently tried taking their kettle (the same Philips one-cup) back to Currys but was told that unless he could prove that he didn't cause the fault then there's nothing they could do.
Thanks,
Mark

you could try but if its an inexpensive kettle then its up for debate if thats a reasonable time for it to last or not. After 6 months you would need to show that it was inherantly faulty and the leak didnt arise because of normal wear and tear, abuse, accident or whatever. I'm not sure what lifetime small electricals are expected to have, larger items could be up to 6 years. Maybe someone else knows.0

thanks Jim, it's not an awfully expensive kettle should've be £30 but we got it for £20 on offer.
i'll pop in and see what they say but it'll probably be put down to general wear and tear, as it's been used everyday atleast 3 times a day, that's over 2500 boils!!!
not sure what the average is???0 -
I've found argos quite variable in how they treat these - some are very accommodating, others not. I've taken a great deal of stuff back to Argos over the years with never a problem - I'm always amazed how many product recalls they have on their walls. You can only ask, maybe yours will be a accommodating branch.0

And if the store did agree that it should have lasted longer, you would either get it sent away for a repair, or you would get a refund massively reduced for 2 years use.0

If its the one i'm thinking of, retail price was between £50-120 depending where and when you bought it. I got mine for £80 when it was on special offer
EDIT: Nvm! Not the one i was thinking of, mines is a brevilleYou keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
I would first try calling Philips directly. They have a reputation as offering good customer care, you might get lucky and get them to send you a replacement.0
