Redundancy - treated unfairly ???? Advice please ....

A family member is going through a consultation process and will find out tomorrow if they are to be made redundant.
A few things are concerning me instantly:-
They have not been allowed to take in an impartial person to support them in meetings (ie a person outside of their own company - nobody inside the company wants to get involved !!!!!).
My relative has asked their HR Department to be present at all the consultation meetings (only them and one other member of staff are affected) HR have declined saying they do not work on the day the meeting is being held !!! End of ...
From conversation I had with FM yesterday it sounds like they are being treated like a criminal as if they have done something wrong like it is a disciplinary hearing not a redundancy consultation. They have received no support or advice from their own in-house HR Department - I told FM surely that's what HR are for, to support their own employees - not to make it so difficult for them the member of staff has no "fight" in them to stand up for themselves or it affects their confidence and so they let the company get away with them treating FM like that.
I have said I would seek some advice for FM on here (fab forum!) so any replies are greatly appreciated.
Thank you

HR are there for the company not employees.
(many will happily lie to employees)
no right to an external person, union or internal.
Focus on the reasons for redundancy and the selection process/pooling.
consultation is there to offer alternative sugestions and trying to find sutable alternatves.0 -

There is no entitlement to be accompanied or supported at such meetings

HR staff are not there to support employees in this way - they work for the employer. They do not have to be there.

You have totally misunderstood the role of HR and the purpose of redundancy consultation. If your FM has alternatives to propose then they should say so, and if they have genuine, reasonably held concerns about their treatment by the employer during the consultation process then they should raise them under the employer's bullying and/or grievance procedure.
However they would be best advised to focus carefully on what they are actually being told, and not to get sidetracked complaining about the process.0
