9.5mm boards are ok provided that your joists are 450mm or less apart.
1800 x 900 boards are obviously much easier to handle than the 2400 x 1200 boards which can be a ball acher. In any case you can use a "deadman" (a T shaped timber prop) to hold up the boards whilst fixing. Use screws to fix the boards .
Don't take any risks with it , but as far as I understood they stopped putting any asbestos in artex in the late 1980s.
The insulation which you are thinking about will reduce heat loss downstairs but obviously it will make the bedroom above it colder. No gain if you like a warm bedroom which then has to be heated more than before.
    Forgotten but not gone.

^^^^^ Correct. There hasn't been any asbestos in Artex since the mid 80's IIRC. Even the old stuff that did used white asbestos that is relatively low risk.

You can have it tested for asbestos. I sent a vinyl tile sample off and it came back negative.

White asbestos is not dangerous. Read up on the great asbestos scam.

I also found the local authority very helpful when I was unsure whether I had asbestos in our home.... they came out and inspected it within a week or so...

Don't pull it down overboard it, it is unbelievable how much crap there will be up there.

Also invest in a joist finder, only about a £5r even better 1 with metal detector and power detection, so much easier.

As an aside all my ceiling where 8ft 9" in our present bungalow, rather than reboard and becuase we were putting a loft conversion in I acttually put in a false ceiling of 3 x 2 studding, strong enough as I could support anywhere from the existing cieling. This leant I could then fill the void with 9" of lost insulation before I reboarded, just a thought.

Oh and you said "screw" in relation to fitting the boards, :T, exactly, don't entertain boarding nails, they've had their day.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Sounds like youve got rid of the artex nipples already if you have "skimmed" over it. If this is the case dont overboard it at all. Get your plasterer to PVA it then put a coat of bonding on - mix up with a handlfull of cement to speed setting time, spread and level it by mid morning - have a spot of lunch then skim it in the afternoon. Job done.
