Has anybody ever won a local newspaper comp in an area they don't live?

For example is it worth entering The Scotsman or the Daily Record competitions if you live in England?

I live in Merseyside and have won a competition run by a newspaper in Cheshire but I've never bothered entering competitions for local papers outside the North West because I assume they'll pick a local winner but what is the general consensus?

  • I won one with Selby(North Yorkshire) times and I'm in Leeds(West Yorkshire). Different regions but it is only a couple of stops away by train.

I think it's worth doing further away comps for a prize I'd want if its worth more than the cost of the train to get it and it's an excuse to visit new places. That way it's not a problem if they can't/won't post it.

I remember one woman saying she'd not noticed it was collect only and won something from Kent but she's northern and they wouldn't post it.

I've won with one of the Sheffield ones - Sheffield Telegraph or something and I'm in Cambridgeshire so no where near. I've also won with Smooth, Capital Radio and Galaxy and none of them are local radio stations.

That's encouraging. I gave up with radio stations after answering a call for my husband when he was out - the caller said she was from a radio station and my husband might have won a big prize but first of all they needed to know which stations he regularly listened to. She said she would call back but she never did.
