He didn't ask for legal advice or moral guidance, he asked a practical question.

Furthermore, I don't have to inform the user, I am legally entitled to install any software on my computer. This has been tested in UK law, do your research and you will see I am correct.

You don't have to inform the user that you have installed a keylogger onto a computer with the express use of monitoring their actions without informing them first?

Would be grateful if you could direct me to this "tested" UK law please.

It's kinda like the guy says - you want to know, you do the research. Unless, of course, you can post clear evidence to contradict him?

Everyone loves the wannabe lawyers and unofficial forum policemen, they so add to the depth and [yawn, excuse me] width of a topic.

    Thanks for the replies.
  • Check out logmein.com - Not sure they'll do what you need but I it all the time to access my computer at home when I'm away.

The best part for me is that I don't have to install anything on my pc. Anyway time to stop being logmeins unofficial advertiser :P

OK Borgman, the last thing you want is a keylogger if you want to view screens remotely or get screen captures. Many apologies if the service I mentioned was poorly researched (it was just a quick search online for the right kind of thing, not a recommendation).

Do you actually need to view the screen or is it internet activity you want to monitor?

In the past I have tried RSM (Real Spy Monitor) for fun.
In addition to log the keystrokes it takes screenshots at set time intervals. You can also set the resolution (quality) of the pics. If I remember correctly the screenshots can be of the active window or full screen.
You can set a maximun of disc space to store the pics, when the allocated space is full it starts overwriting the old ones.

It can also record all the URLs visited plus it has other features I cannot remember now (it was 3-4 years ago) but I think it was messenger logs and ftp/email delivery which I don't recommend as QuackQuack explained earlier.

To successfully install this piece of software you need to disable your antivirus, install the keylogger then add an exception to your antivirus before turning it on again otherwise it will block it. Also block the keylogger using your firewall just in case it tries to "call home".
I am not sure what "modern" antivirus think about RSM now but back then the keylogger started in stealth mode at system startup and it was running as an hidden process.
