House Alarm Code

Let me start with...no I'm not a burglar in desperate need of turning off the alarm.

Right, I moved into my house about a year ago, and it has an alarm fitted. The only problem being I don't have the code.

So I thought I'd attempt to contact the manufacturer of the alarm, the problem being the number on the alarm doesn't work and I can't find them on the internt so I assume they are now defunct.

Does anyone have any bright ideas of how I can attempt to get an alarm code so that my alarm can actually be of use.

JC

Like closed says, why haven't you told us the maker????
  • You should have got this with the keys when you moved in. Ours was written on the envelope the keys were in - are you sure it isn't lurking somewhere in your house move paperwork?

Try the estate agent you bought the house from - they may still have it on their records, or have the new address for the previous owners that you can write to. Alternatively, if you have longstanding neighbours who knew the previous owner, they might have been given the code! (we know our neighbours' code and vice versa in case of emergencies).

It is possible, though, that if the alarm hasn't been used for long enough, it will need to be re-programmed with a new code anyway (ours is like this). Don't ask me how though.
  • The house could of been repossessed in which case he nobody would of known the code except for the previous owners who probably wouldn't of wanted to cooperate.

My question is, how did the alarm get activated if you don't have the code? Did you try opening one of the sensors or alarm box? That might of triggered the alarm to sound because decent alarms are fitted with tamper sensors.

The bad news is, there is more than just the operating code that you don't know, there is also the installers maintenance code which is needed in order to carry out work on the system. Without that if any sensors or alarm box are tampered with the alarm will sound like I suspect that you have found out.

The only suggestion I can give is to find out the Alarm make and model if possible and contact a few alarm installers to see if they can do anything, chances are without the installer master code they might not be able to do anything unless there is some backdoor on the system that they know about.

Consider replacing the alarm control unit, but reusing all the PIRs and sensors...?
It's not that difficult, if you are careful, and alarm controls aren't that expensive. Try and get the same make (looks like that might be difficult), or as similar as you can, so the wire runs inside are the same length.

It'd be a "last resort", but might be the simplest in the longer run!

Post the Make and give us a chance to answer.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    And an expensive one!

Most (all?) alarm panels can be reset to factory default (eg user code 1234 and engineer code 7890) by the inserting or removal of a shorting link on the PCB.

Grabbing a manual online and spending an hour reading it should enable most people (and/or their technically minded friends) to set it back up again.

If the alarm panel itself is plain with no markings, look at the keypad. This should have a model number on it which should give you a clue what type of system it is.
If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button! ;)
  • if not a pic of the keypad/control box would help.
