Having named drivers on policy

Options
My younger brother has just passed his driving test. Being only 17 his potential insurance premium for his own car would be huge. He has asked me if he could be put on my policy on my car as a named driver. However I am worried that if he crashes and a claim is made, then it is a black mark against me and I will end up with a higher insurance premium because of it. Is this the case? Or am is my insurance cost not affected because I am not the one driving?

Thanks

Of course it will have an effect on your policy it is your insurance not his, any claim will be recorded against you.

Have you asked how much the extra premium will be to add him to your policy? I'm guessing it won't be cheap.

Alternatively could he not take out his own insurance, and add you as a named driver. The cost could come down if there's a lower risk driver (you) on his policy.

Your policy - your claim record - your NCD - your premium will rise next year (even if he is no longer a named driver).

So will his, of course. If he claims in his first year of driving he will find it almost impossible to find an insurer .

Only if he is the main driver of course. But yes, this could be cheaper. In my early 20s (and male) and it is beneficial having my parents named, as well as my housemate (female) who occasionally drives. To the tune of a 30-40% saving.
