How much data do you use, and do you use it all the time?

If 1GB/month is enough, the 30 day/1GB 3 mobile SIMs that you can buy on eBay for around a fiver seem pretty good, or the 3 month/3GB ones that 7dayshop sell for £12.48 (but note that they are micro-SIMs).

No - buying direct from 3 costs £10 for the 1Gb and £20 for the 3 month one, last time I checked.

and what does micro sims mean? thanks

A microSIM is a small SIM! I believe they are mainly used in Apple products, but TBH I've never actually seen one in the flesh.

You ~should~ be able to see how much data you use by looking at your online account details for your existing (expiring) account with 3. Mine shows how much of a month's allowance I've used up. I only use it for email and browsing, and I never get near to using 1GB in a month, but if you view iplayer or file share a lot you could get through that in no time.

You can use the same modem or buy a newer 3UK modem for £20 or less.
  • Do you have a smart phone? I only ask because you can tether them to a computer and use the internet that way. They're just as fast as a dongle too.

Expect the same as 3 UK.

Do you get HSPA in your area? If so, perhaps you would get faster speeds with a new modem, as they are rated higher.
