ok, i have a friend who only has a provisional licence. Just bought a 50cc moped. What is the law regarding driving this, what courses are legal requirements from day 1? How long can he drive with L plates??

Im typing this on my mobile phone and at work, so please just general answers as cannot click on links. Cheers

Your friend will have to do a compulsory basic training session with an approved training body before he/she can drive on the road. Once this is completed they can ride on the road, but L plates will have to be displayed front and rear.

The CBT certificate will be valid for two years and if your friend is still on a provisional licence at that point it will be necessary to do another CBT.

If your friend is 17 or over they can ride a bike up to 125cc with L plates displayed.

Dont forget the insurance, Seems this has not escaped the price hikes. £500+ when my nephew got quotes.

Probably doesn't help that his step dad had 4 bikes stolen/attempted theft in as many years.

  • Passing a car test subsequent to doing CBT will exempt you from having to re-do CBT and wearing L-plates for the purposes of riding 50cc mopeds. This is because modern car licences come with full moped entitlement, valid with a CBT certificate.

That would apply as long as the CBT certificate is valid at the time the driving test has been passed.

It would seem that you're correct. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/53/regulation/8/made 5 a ii

Seems a unnecessary. Like a lot of legislation I suppose.
