I take in dogs when their owners go away and feel sure I should have some sort of insurance but do not know what. Can anyone help please?

I'd suggest speaking to a broker.
Looking online at the usual suspects for SME insurance there is certainly the option to select kennels, catteries & Pet sitters as your trade and it offers up the usual selection of Professional Indemnity, Product/ Public Liability, Buildings, Equipment, Stock and Employers Liability cover but I would suggest speaking to someone to get a better understanding what you'd actually be covered for and what class of insurance it counts as (I assume you are wanting to cover things like one of your "visitors" running away or getting in a fight and injured etc)0
