Fan Oven not working..Help!!

Options
Hi, I wonder if anyone might know a solution to this, I can't seem to find it described as a common oven problem online.

It's not just the element because the fan, light and clock aren't working on the big fan oven. The upper small oven, grill and gas hobs are working though. A couple of days before and still now I notice a faint buzzing noise which makes me think something electrical. But if it was something simple like the fuse wouldn't the whole cooker stop working?

Anyone good with fixing things like this? My boyfriend won't mind helping me take it apart but we want to get an idea of what we're looking for first!!

Thanks, Ru :-)

    Hi there,

I am no expert but have had cooker 'issues' lately.

    Three questions:

    1) make and model of oven?

    2) how old is it? and

    3) when the oven is not switched on, is the rest of the (non-gas part) of the cooker 'OK = normal/works'. In other words is turning the main oven on the start of the problem?

I (wrongly) thought an element had gone on my Creda. Turns out that the switch (simmerstat) had failed. Easily sourced and fixed - in my case. In my case the oven switch would activate the light/fan/oven. If nothing were to happen it would point to a duff switch. The clock however, is strange, more like a short circuit..... Can you think of anything that may have caused a short?

You (obviously) have to be very careful when playing with electrics (don't want to fry the boyfriend). So don't tinker - unless you/he knows what you are/he's doing.

The big fan oven may be separately fused to the upper small oven, grill and gas hobs.

I suppose you have checked that any cooking timers are disabled?

  • I had problems with my oven recently, a elec fan, 15 odd years old. The top oven/grill worked fine but the main, fan oven worked when it felt like it initially then not at all. Turned out the timer facility was kicking in when it felt like it and after a while, completely overtaking the oven function.

Repair man disconnected the timer facility (for just a few quid), so I have no clock/timer now but the oven works fine. He could have replaced the board which ran the timer and clock but it was far more expensive and we're planning to replace it next year anyhow.

You really need a decent repair chap!

Hi Ru , bit difficult without knowing how your cooker is configured, you are correct that the element being faulty would not cause everything to stop, nor would the thermostat, i would guess its a loose wire or a faulty selector switch/timer, your mains supply will go into your oven selector switch then split off to the different ovens so i would expect to find a fault around or in the selector switch, please make sure you disconnect the oven from the supply if working on it first though
