DIY Kitchen

Options
Hi,

My OH is planning on remodelling our kitchen. He's very handy & has a few friends in the trade to help him out but we're just wondering what the correct 'order' of this should be? Obviously we need to clear the room first then..

eg
1. Building & Structural
2. Plumbing & electrics
3. Plastering
4. ??

Mainly wondering when to lay flooring, when to tile, when to fit cooker extractor fan & when to have bi folding doors fitted (before or after flooring?) - Currently boarded up where they'll go.

Many thanks!

It depeends on what you need/ want to do.
    Generally, you'd rip out,
    Do building and structural work.
Do the electrics and plumbing to 'first fit' based on where you need everything
    Plaster
Fit kitchen and do final fit plumbing and electrics
Tile the floor and walls last - else they get damaged during the fitting.

But it really depends. I'm not sure about the doors. I'd be temped to fit them as part of the building work, then you can finish them nicely with all the detail work at the end.

I hope your OH really is handy! I tried and failed a kitchen fit, and I've happily refitted my own bathroom. There's just so much more to consider ,and finish is so much more important in a kitchen. I ended up paying a fitter (well, a joiner) to do mine ,and I have to say for the work he did I felt we were buying his time cheap!
  • Id say
    123 correct
4 paint but expect some touching up after kitchen has gone in. Much easier than cutting iin once wall units etc fitted

YOu can do floor before or after kitchen has gone in but id get the bi fold doors fitted before the flooring then the floor can be fitted upto the new doors rather than having to take an educated guess. Id also suggest if the flooring isnt tiles id deffo do it after kitchen has been fitted

Its easiest to fit the cooker and extractor once all the units are fitted

    Start again;;;;;

    1st priority budget...

2nd... = expectations, hope you're still with me.

You need an overall plan, forget the fine detail unless you have unlimitted finances.
    So.....

    With your ££££££ in account;

Rip out the old units, Repair/replace any defective plaster above about 0.9 metrs height.

Caviat; remember any extra/additional electrics required about this point, ie, put in any required circuitry at this point

The plumbing should all come in below this level, so easy.

You mention structural?????????????????. To be honest that doesn't come into this topic, but expand or otherwise before you plan the kitchen.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Once you know what you want (and it sounds like you already do), get your friends in the trade to assess exactly how feasible it is.
Projects like this can spiral out of control when you discover hidden horrors, some of which could have implications for more of your house than just your kitchen.

    Good luck.:)
