Problem with landline

Issue no.1 - Phone would not ring when an incoming call happened but the screen would light up and if you answered it you could speak to the person

OR

it would ring 1 or 2 bells and then stop (and the person ringing would hear it ringing a few times and then just silence)

Plugged in an old cordless phone and that seemed to ring fine all the time so assumed the original phone was faulty and sent it back (had it for about 20 months prior with no problems)

Ordered a new phone

Issue no. 2 - the new phone was also having issues in that sometimes it will ring 2 times and then stop ringing (and also disconnect the user at the other end who is calling me) at other times it will work fine - though it seems the ringing 2 times situation happens more often.

There is one master phone socket downstairs - cordless phone base and router is plugged into it. No other devices connected.

I replaced the adsl filter this morning to see if it makes any difference.

Rung 17070 - quiet line test is fine, ringback works fine, fast test didn't return a result.

Issue no.3 - for the last few days when the phone rings the internet disconnects at the same time - and when it comes back it is slow/not loading some websites (but they can be pinged so seems it isn't a dns issue)

What else should I try before calling BT?

As always, my money would be on the cause being a faulty line card at the exchange rather than a problem with your equipment.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Just rang the landline about 10 times from my mobile

    9 times it rang fine

Once it stopped ringing after 2 bells - and my mobile acted as if it had been answered - i.e. the call timer started and just had silence on the line.

Have removed the faceplate from the phone socket and plugged the adsl filter into the test socket now.
