Places like Halford/Kwik-Fit/National nearly always only fail on stuff they can put right. Like exhausts and tyres and stuff.

But they have failed this one on corrosion, not something that they do normally?

The spare wheel carrier is free to fall to the floor without the wheel in and done up tight as it can jump out the metal hook to be honest for a V plate Festa i dont think you done to bad as stated corrosion is something that festas do its because road mice like the taste of them seriously hope u get sorted
  • Update.... I took the car to another garage. They found the following problems:

    1. faulty light (needs replacing, not the entire unit)
    2. welding (as Halfords did)
    3. Replace a wishbone (I suspected this, as when replacing brakes 6 months ago, I was told to keep an eye on it)

Total cost £150. So, I've learnt my lesson.

Think I've found the garage for the considerable future.

    Thanks for your comments guys

So they're ok with the bearing, but failed a wishbone instead?

My advice for what it's worth is take your car to an MOT only tester that doesn't offer servicing or repairs, you'll feel alot happier about failing then!
  • you wouldn't Adam and Eve it!

Collected my car, drove home (8 miles) pulled up outside, smoke's coming out from under the bonnet. Have a look, and the pipe from the coolant expansion tank has snapped where it means some grey box thing kind of just under the windscreen at the back. The expansion tank is now completely empty with all the fluid evaporating off the engine. I've made a temporary fix with some hosing and filled the tank up again, but I've a concern now that I have no heating in the car. Air conditioning doesn't appear to be working either. Is there any chance that it may automatically blow the fuse as not to overheat?

Any suggestions will not be scoffed at....

Fords of this era are pretty bad for corrosion. Even some of the new models are suffering at their first MOT. My fiesta failed on pretty much the same stuff.

Sills are a big job and that price for both is very good indeed. It's a lot of work taking the interior out so it doesnt go on fire. Keep in mind that if the corrosion is not bad - or is very slight and you feel you are being hard done by - you can cover it up and the MOT tester cannot fail it as long as its not uncovered by his little plastic hammer.. For example with underseal, stone chip shield etc. Sideskirts often hide corrosion well.

In years to come, no BMW will fail on anything underneath condition wise as its all hidden by undertrays. Having said that, because of this it is likely to be in mint condition even when a decade old.
