Unemployment up again

UK unemployment rose by 128,000 in the three months to October to 2.64 million, the highest level since 1994.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the jobless rate was 8.3%, up from 7.9% three months ago.
Youth unemployment rose to 1.027 million, the highest since records began in 1992, beating the previous record set only last month.
The number of people out of work and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose by 3,000 to 1.6 million in November.
However, the rate of increase in the claimant count showed signs of slowing down.
The 3,000 rise was much less than the approximate 15,000 figure expected on average by economists.
Moreover, the ONS also revised down the October increase in the claimant count from the 5,300 reported last month to just 2,500.

It's not surprising really is it. Net immigration of 300k a year and very few new jobs being created, can only lead to more unemployment.
Just looked at a couple of employment sites to gauge the situation around my way. Hardly any temp jobs even at minimum wage, which at this time of the year is unusual.
Still, as long as employers have a plentiful supply of cheap labour that's all that matters. Let's keep importing people so that we get a generation of youth brought up on a life of benefits.0 -
Shocking state of affairs0

Yes, exactly the same is happening, Labour spent all the money and then borrowed money we couldn't afford and put the nation's finance in a state of ruin. And now the Tories have got to do what they did in the '80s and pull the purse strings in to balance the books.
NuLabour got us in this position and they're also responsible for the huge influx of immigrants that are causing wage deflation and unemployment.0 -

So UK people cant do the jobs immigrants do? Or is it a case of 'being too good' for that type of work?0 -

This is awful news, and in my opinion is not going to get any better soon.
I have said it many times on here that things are going to get far worse in 2012, and for those saying we need to do this or that are just dreaming, there is no quick fix. Labour borrowed up to the hilt and now the Tories are having to balance the books again.
Of course we could borrow again and create some temp jobs, but that will be only putting off the inevitable. It seems like Labour's answer is borrow in the good times and borrow in the bad times, they don't know any better.
What amazes me though is WHY was the welfare bill so huge under Labour when we had Gordons miracle economy, now that we really need a good welfare state to help the poor !!!!!!s hitting REAL hard times there is nothing left in the pot.0 -

Benefits are more attractive than cleaning, farm labouring etc.
Not exactly a fully representative annecdote but a couple of years ago there was a clip on the news about unemployment in the Northants area. Portuguese farm labour were doing teh fruit picking. Interview with local chav complaining that the foreigners were taking all the jobs, but when asked if he had applied to work on the farms his reply was that he wouldnt get out of bed to do that.
As to the politics, the tories dont seem in any hurry to cut immigration, they have given the sound bites of being tough, but has immigration fallen..
Sadly we have a generation (more than one really) that appear happier to claim benefits than undertake menial jobs.0 -

Sadly a lot of what you say is true, but I think we are fast approaching a point of you either work or go hungry, that tends to focus the mind a little more.
And besides from the tough love this country obviously needs, I cannot help but feel that so many people would feel better about themselves if they were contributing to their society rather than taking from it.0
