Ive got a machine readable passport and I hope to go to the States soon, is it better to have a Biometric passport?

Makes no difference to which one you have, your current one will be fine. The new biometric one is expensive and not compulsory.

there is only one price for new/replacement passports so is no more expensive than the standard one. However am not sure if they are still just doing some biometric and some standard - you don't personally get a choice though. Have just renewed OH's passport and his came back as biometric within a week.

I should have made myself clearer in that a biometric and/or normal passport is expensive, so no need to renew when you don't need it and the expense that would be.

I just got a new passport last year (when bio metric was available) and it was a normal machine readable one, plus 9 months carried over, so it looks like we won't need a biometric one for 10 years because mine doesn't run out till Dec 2016 !!

May be of interest to some..............

My passport ran out a few weeks ago and as we are going on holiday soon, thought I had better renew it. Filled in the passport application on-line which is then sent to you a few days later to sign, date and enclose pictures. Posted the application on a Tuesday new biometric passport returned (via courier service??) the following Tuesday.

    Brilliant service:j

You now have a better chance of giving the $5 tip you intended, rather than the $50 one you actually gave !
