Help with carpet

We recently had a new carpet laid on the stairs, landing and in one bedroom, it's a Berber loop style with a textured pattern costing £11 a square yard.
At first it all seemed fine but when we turned the light on in the bedroom you could see the backing through the carpet, it kind of shone as if it reflected the light. We then went on to check the rest of the carpet and it was all the same.
The fitting company agreed and ordered a replacement which they checked before installation and said it had the same problem. We have since been supplied with an upgraded 100% wool version costing £14 a square yard and although slightly less obvious, it has the same problem.
Is this a problem with a Berber style carpet or just poor quality carpet?
If anyone has any experience with the same problem or knowledge on the subject, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

OH is a carpet fitter, and informs me that this is typical of Berber carpets, there isn't the same volume of fibres as in a carpet with for example a twist or cropped pile....he describes Berber carpets on stairs as grinning at him as he fits them with gaps in the pile!RIP Iain
