Guinea pig has died and am GUTTED!

Small pets have varying lifespans, not all just live for a year or two. Rabbits can live for 9 years+, guinea pigs 4-6 years+
Lots of factors that can affect this - if OP got them from a petshop, for example, chances are they came from a mass breeder who suppliers many petshops and the guinea pigs don't have the best genes. This guinea pig could have been born with a weaker heart, lungs, etc. or could have picked up a bug, or even just had a stroke or developed a tumour or similar. A post-mortem would give a more conclusive answer if you wanted to be sure, but it might be better to take the remaining guinea pig(s?) to the vet just to have them checked out.
The were both from a pet shop which I must admit was not the best, but they were both perfectly healthy (as far as I know). He;s actually buried now , so I suppose I'll just never no what happened0 -
Ours died on Saturday
We have two guineas and 2 rabbits (one rabbit lives with one guinea) well we did.
This one was about 6 years old and was a lovely character. When I went out to feed them Saturday morning I found the rabbit lying on him and his eyes were open but he was definitely deadI don't know whether it was the cold or the rabbit who kicks a lot that killed him but it is very sad.
We can't bring them in because there is nowhere to put them so I pack their beds full of straw and feed them lots.It might have been a particularly cold snap friday night and that might be what killed our guineas?
He is buried in the garden now and we found a little statue of a guinea at the garden centre that looks just like him and put it on top of where he lies.
Oh Skypie I'm sorry:(
I'm just glad that I didn't find ours, it must be been horrible! Ours has been buried at nanas house as we have a great big dog who loves nothing better than digging. I love the idea of a statue though what a lovely idea.:)0 -

Yesterday one of my rats was put to sleep and I've sobbed like a mad woman!
I'm sorry:(
My sister keeps rats and she lost one a few months ago. I remember that he suffered quite a lot at the end and she had to have him put down, she was inconsolable! You don't quite realise what they do mean to you until you actually lose one.0 -
Thank you mammyof7.
I took the decision to put him to sleep yesterday before he got too bad, I felt he was in pain and his breathing was terrible, I keep worrying I did it too soon, but he had a lump removed 2 weeks ago and I presume that was cancerous.
My rats are all 26 months old, so rather old chaps, unfortunately I have another with a lump (they are prone to tumours) so they are getting ill at the same time!0 -
Awww no, 2 years ago our family dog died and I still get upset about it now. She was a lovely lovely dog, and sadly got liver disease just before her second birthday and we had to have her put down at Christmas
I don't think I've ever cried so much for so long! They really do become a member of the family

I'd be interested to know how others felt when their pets died.
I had to have my 20 year old cat pts a year ago - it will be a year tomorrow actually - and I am still gutted. They may just be animals, but they become fully fledged members of the family.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012
