If you consider that new model ones are only $199 in the US and £139 in the UK (on apple.com shop), that's not very good bargain. I will wait till price drops more for 18hr ones.

How do you know these are the old ones. There is nothing to say this from the Boots site?

The contents of the pack varies for the new and old models. The description at the Boots site is for the old model, with the firewire cable and the ac adapter in the box contents.

This is *definitely* the old model.

Great spot, "people who wait get left behind"
  • £99 for a 4gb Ipod with 8 hr battery, charger & cables.

    £139 for a 4gb Ipod with 18 hr battery.

Top one still looks an excellent deal to me.

Maybe, for you, I wouldn't choose it personally.

You don't get extra "cables" with the old model, you get one extra cable, a firewire one. This is likely to be pretty redundant for most people because you only need to use one cable with the iPod, and the real world speed between firewire and USB 2.0 when sync'ing iPods is virtually identical. The only people who will suffer on this issue are those with pc's that do not have USB, but do have firwire, and thats probably a fairly small number.

The next issue is the ac adapter. You get one bundled in the old pack, but not with the latest one. This is a significant difference, at least for some people anyway, depending on usage patterns. Most people wont have a regualr use for an AC adapter, because the iPod recharges via USB when you connect it to the pc. I'll grant you though it's going to be handy for talking on holiday once or twice a year, or maybe for those who need to regularly use their iPods away from a USB port. Of course you can buy generic adapters now for a few quid, so it's not a huge problem, you want one, pick one up.

Then we come to the biggie... battery. The battery play time on the new models is close to 3 times as long as you get with this older one Boots are off loading. The test results that people on iPodLounge are reporting seem to be falling around 22 hours or more on the new models.

The battery on the old iPod mini is a major achilles heel and in real world usage, when you might be using the backlight occasionally, jumping from song to song etc, it's perfectly normal after some use for the old minis to give 4 or 5 hours before dying. That's pretty miserable.

When you consider that the new iPod minis are available direct from Apple for £128 with free delivery (and free engraving if you like that sort of thing), I don't think this Boots offer gives good value at all.

    *shrug*
