Live music and free booze - Id have gone round in my PJ's and rocked
ha, yeah, didn't it used to be polite to invite the neighbours if you were throwing a party? I did stand on the doorstep in my PJs drinking my brandy with a few of them for 5 mins, and even got asked on a date by one of their mates who said I look pretty even at 2.30am! He clearly had his beer googles on.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I did - and noise problems are no longer their remit. They gave me the number of the local authority emergency weekend number to call, and I tried umpteen times with no answer. I went back to the police who did very nicely offer to come if they had a chance although they no longer have any powers to stop any noise...and also told me to complain about the council, who are under a contract to provide a helpline and service over the weekend.
The police did drop by about 5 minutes after the band stopped.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I was about to say this. If you had phoned the police, they either would have come out, or given you a number for the noise dept. of your local council, and they would have come to your house and assessed to volume of the noise.
It was only the t.v a little while ago, how they do some tests, then go to the offending property and give them a warning. I think if they get 2 or more in one night, they can get a summons or a fine.
Then again if it was just a "one off" they should have had a little bit of consideration and toned it down a bit.
Been there, done that and doing it. And also a relative of the last spoilt brat who lived next door has just moved in recently and is currently seeing how far she can push. I would be beside myself with rage had a neighbour STARTED a party at 1am.
The fact that they had a live band just goes to show that they have zero consideration for anyone around them (out of spite or just plain ignorance as i often find). Makes my blood boil.
In my book, the 'proper' thing to do is to tell your immediate neighbours a few days in advance 'I will be having a few friends over on X night for a party. There might be a bit of noise but i will make sure everyone's inside by midnight' sort of thing.
I think you are justified to be peev'ed, but don't let it become an obsession an take over your life.0 -

But..... it could also have made it worse.
OP it may have been a one off but it also might not be. There is New Year coming up - perfect excuse for a party, maybe you should have one but.... let them know

There would have been no answer because some councils only run that service till 1am. When the idiot who has now moved had an all night party, I told the police that I was by myself and there was drunken arguing going off (DH was on nights) it was rather scary tbh. A load of idiots and a dog turning up. Unfortunately next door but 1 were away overnight or the rather large husband would have probably punched the hosts's lights out for disturbing their childs sleep. Pity really.
The police finally turned up at 5.30am. 2 hours after I called, and about 30 mins after people were leaving.BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

Thanks, I feel better just getting it off my chest and hearing 'they did WHAT!!!??' instead of OH being all weedy about it and irritating me even more.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I'd completely blank them for as long as I liked and let my husband be friendly if it was that important to him.
I certainly wouldn't be ready to forgive and forget so soon afterwards. Live music starting at 1am? They're either bonkers or completely stupid. Either way, they're ruddy inconsiderate.
I wonder how much it would cost to hire a brass-band? One which accepts engagements for 6am on a Sunday morning?0 -
What they did was unacceptable but it sounds like a one off and you have made your feelings clear. IMO you are absolutely right that they should have hired a hall for a large, loud, late party with live music not had it in their home. I would be polite to them but start maintaining the boundaries of your property (not by telling the kids to burger off but by politely but firmly saying please play in your own garden) as it sounds like their lack of consideration has got out of hand. It's possible to be polite to them but still be assertive.0
