replacement at cost or specs

Hi all, new to forum and looking forward to some sage advice.The question I have is - if I purchased an item ( in this case a samsung blu ray recorder with freeview HD - purchased September 2011) and it goes wrong and they say I can have a replacement ,but the original item is no longer stocked,so pick from their catalogue or web-site a different one. The problem is that none of the items offered have anything like the specs on original player and I would have to add at least £100 to £200 to receive same spec one - I was just wondering, do they have to replace with item of similar specs or similar cost?,cheers Steve

You're entitled to choose a replacement with the same specification. They're entitled to reject this request and provide a refund if it is disproportionately costly.

Remember that a 100 quid more BluRay player may only be a few pounds more wholesale.

That seems to go against the general rule for electronic items of increasing spec for decreasing price as time goes on, unless the increase in this case is yet another sign of profiteering by retailers from the Thailand floods.
