Even if the attendants were not there, most men would still not wash their hands anyway!! I always wash my hands in a pub/club but I usually appear to be one of few as most just zip up and leave, attendant or not!

On the subject of attendants, I never pay them and if it became compulsory I would go a different pub/club.

Surely on that basis then its the venue's responsibility to ensure that sufficient security is around.

Not sure how the attendant thing works, got in my head they aren't paid by the venue?! But surely if the venue was to pay the attendants wages and offer the service as part of the hospitality then there would be no need to ask for tips and any tips a customer wanted to leave could be left at the bar in light of the overall experience. Money should not really be handed over in a toilet and people shouldnt be pressured (which no arguments they are) in to paying to use a service that the venue offers anyway with the costs being in the price of the goods you purchase.

Of course its the venues responsibility to ensure their is enough security around, and this is monitored by the council and police licensing, so I am not sure what your quite saying here ?

My point was they are useful but not essential. If we thought that a club or pub had serious problems in their toilets then we would seek additional conditions requiring frequent monitoring by an SIA door supervisor or member of staff.

If only it were that simple: "We need to stop being so English".
If only the answer to everything in life was "Harden up" - which is effectively what you're saying. It's not that simple.

I'm afraid I am exactly the same as the people in Martin's post - I want to wash my hands but sometimes won't because I don't want to feel obligated to pay.

My comment was slightly tongue in cheek however I was not saying "harden up" I was in effect saying stop being so sensitive.

It's quite simple and straightforward its your money and you should feel no obligation whatsoever to pay to wash your hands, the attendants know this and their isn't an issue, (the issue is that most people suffer from cognitive dissonance they want to give something because they feel they should but on the other hand they get cross because they think why should they pay this ultimately ends up with you avoiding contact and not washing your hand).

Go wash your hands take his paper towel and thank him simples !

never been to a nighclub before, didnt know you had to pay!. On a different note, i used the toilet in a shop for the first time in about 20 years a few weeks ago!. i don't like that people can hear others having a pee, or worse!. They had no toilet paper. Isn't this worse then not washing hands?. Another toilet i went into with a friend, they also had no toilet paper, and i noticed they just had soap beside the sink, and it had a chip out of it!. I think washing hands in public places is worse then not washing them at all. And i always wash my hands after i come home anyway.

I think it's much nicer if someone turns the taps on...any idea how many germs are on them!!

You don't have to tip if you don't want to, but just be polite. I don't understand why people have an issue with it. Though I think if we went back to having attendants at petrol stations people would feel uncomfortable with that too??

Unless you are about to eat with bare hands, it's hardly intended for your benefit, you plonker! Don't you ever think about why other people should have to be contaminated by your urine and worse on door handles, escalator rails, train door buttons and the like ???

If you don't wish to touch the tap handles then use a paper towel to turn them on and off - use it to open the door before you leave as well else you'll get contaminated by what was left by irrational people like you !

Oh and USE the soap - the number of t|ts I see who go through a stupid ritual of turning on a tap, splashing their hand (yes sometimes one hand (!) with water and then away, amazes me.

Mind you, the guy at the Halal Meat counter in Asda this evening took the biscuit - a nice long trail along the back of his hand as he wiped his nose with one sweep and with the next was bare-handedly re-arranging the chicken legs in the chiller. Lovely ...

We are becoming a nation of mindless morons.

Why would anyone feel the need to tip £1? Or even 50p? The typical nightclub toilet probably has 100-200 visits per hour - they'd make a good wage if everyone tipped 10-20p. That's about what I usually tip - why would anyone expect any more for 10 seconds or so of work?

Second point is that urine is really not a health hazard, it's virtually sterile. It's far more unhygenic to sneeze into your hand without immediately washing it than to not wash after a slash.

In Munich, there are usually old locals who clean the loos in pubs and resturants for change. They sit downstairs attending the loos. They are not intrusive, they just sit there and wander in and clean occasionally (I do remember one who came in and turned pages on newspapers in front of the urinals, though this thankfully is rare). They got spare change in the sums of 5-20p. It's rare not to find them.

    I don't mind this.

Going into a 'trendy' night club in the UK (I tend to frequent alternative clubs where this practice is zero) with friends, a rare occurance because I hate them so - I have discovered these 'bog trolls' which like to hand you towels or have a range of perfumes to sully the air. I'll happily wash my hands and leave - I don't take offered towels.

I don't tip. Why? Because I pay horrendous prices on the bar and if they want to offer an unnecessary service they're welcome to, but I'm not paying extra on it.

It's a culture thing and whilst I'm happy to do as in Rome outside my country, I do not want to be like that in my own country and will vote without spending anything. Who knows what I'll do if it becomes mainstream.

Urine IS sterile (in a disease-free person)... until it leaves the body. It can become contaminated by bacteria on the skin and genitals on the way out.

But how likely are you to catch something through trace amount of urine, even if contaminated? I remember the old myths about getting VD off a toilet seat...

Whereas if someone sneezes into their hand and then uses a door handle etc, anyone touching that in the next hour or so could easily pick up a virus. That's presumably why colds are flu are far more easily spread than genital infections.
