is there any noticeable difference between tyre brands?

I couldn't disagree more with some of that - in my experience driving reasonably powerful mostly rwd cars (200-260bhp) there is a massive difference between the "high end" budget tyres like nankangs (NS2's for example -complete ditchfinders) and mid rangers, usually only fully apparent in wet conditions when you really need them to work. There is generally a far less noticeable difference between most mid range tyres and premiums but you're right in that there are stinkers in every range (i.e the Pirelli P6000).
The "few per cent" comment was based on objective tests run by the various motoring bodies around Europe.
It is likely that we're in a position where those extra few per cent make all the difference on high-end vehicles -- in which case saying that the "premium" brands are good is a duff argument anyway seeing as some big-brand tyres don't make the cut either.
Perhaps I should have qualified the comment. When it comes to your average shopping cart, the difference between the "second-tier" budget/mid-range brands and the premium tyres is not especially significant.0 -
did a bit of research and was struggling to get anywhere to fit anything reasonable on my day off (monday)
found a local garage near where i grew up, conti sport contact 2's, £68 a corner (vat on top) with a fitting slot available monday first thing (perfect time for me)
those horrid p6000s will soon be a memory thank heavens, its been like driving a rollerskate :eek:Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?0
