Small stairs in cottage- Advice?

I have just bought a 16th century cottage :D

The problem is that the stairs are small , so am limited what I can get upstairs.

Has anybody moved into similar property & have any tips ?

Looks like I will have to sell my nice pine bedroom furniture for flatpack

Can you remove an upstairs window without too much damage and use a crane to get everything in?

    It won't be cheap.

It does have a merchant type window but I am not sure if it works correctly.

The other problem is I would be scared to drag anything through the window as it is Grade 11 listed & the brickwork round the windows is a special feature.
Would cost a fortune if I damage those bricks.

Could be sleeping on matress with piles of clothes around the room lol

You could hire a scaffold tower, lean a ladder against that and man handle things up it.

At least that way you'll be at first floor level both sides of the window. Then people each side will be able to help.

  • The last people in my house had a king size divan bed and they had to hoist it up over the flat roof from the back garden! Our stairs are very narrow and it does limit what you get up them. I have bed frames that I can take apart, makes life so much easier! Wardrobes might be a different matter tho if I ever get to move house!
