Finding out if stocks brought for me as a child still exist

Hi,
To keep a long story short.
I was a weird child who among other things wanted shares for Christmas when I was no more than 10 years old. My parents obliged and brought me some in BT and another (gas I believe but would need to look into this).
The shares were in my fathers name with my name also on the certificates as ..... esq
Unfortunately family life broke down and I have not had any communication with my fathers for well over 10 years. What I want to know is whether the shares are actually mine (if they still exist) and how I would go about getting hold of them without having to communicate with my father.
I appreciate it's not a clear cut question but any advice would be greatly received.
Cheers in advance.

I had this except I said buy microsoft and they got the rolls royce IPO which was crap. As I understand it you do not own the shares, they are controlled on your behalf and would also need to be sold on your behalf and the money handed over manually.
Thats just my guess though, Im not certain at this moment
Also BT isnt that great a loss. Again I had some bought for me and they are still there, I said to sell them years ago as I did some work for them and werent run at any profit but nobody listened to me
If you had BG that would be the jackpot I think0 -
Ah well, I can kiss good bye to those then.
Thanks for the info..Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
