Can I take out home contents cover if I'm not on the tenancy agreement?

Options
Me and my girlfriend rent a house with another couple. The other couple are on the tenancy agreement but we are not, purely for the reason that the management company wanted £60 per name added to it.

Will my stuff be covered if I'm not on the tenancy agreement? Do all 4 of us need to be named policyholders?

On a side note, will I have to move my car insurance from my parents' house? I'd prefer not to because I don't live in as nice an area as they do, and being a young male it's already expensive enough.

You do not need to be on the tenancy agreement to get contents insurance. You will need to read the 'assumptions' made by insurers and answer question honestly. Some insurers will restrict cover (or not offer cover) where the property is not solely occupied by you and members of your immediate family.

You will need to tell you car insurers of your address. The reason you don't want to tell them is the reason they will want to know. It may cost more in premium but could be the difference between a claim being paid or refused.
  • If you have a policy with just your name on it it will most likely only cover your items within the household. Probably worth noting that as you are presumably sharing with non-family members you will only be covered for theft if there are signs of violent or forced entry to the property.
  • If we pay for the whole year can we get a refund or transfer the cover to another house?
  • In most cases you can do either. You will often have a fee to pay to do either (check what they are before buying) and a refund is typically less than pro-rata
