Netgear question..

Just need a little help...
i have successfully installed a netgear DG834G from aol onto my PC, and have successfully set up 2 laptops wirless on it as well.I just followed the instructions on the installation disc and everything was ok.
So do i now have to secure the system from other people or is it secure automatically.
I have a print off from this forum on how to secure a network, but i don,t want to mess up what i have already done.
I have done the 192.168.0.1 on internet explorer and looked at the settings but am unsure what to do now.If i make any changes do i do it on the PC (which is wired into the router )or do i have to do something to each Laptop.
many thanks...

  • To secure the network, you will need to set up encryption (a 'network key'). Think of it like password protecting your wireless signal.

You do this on the 'Wireless settings' option of the router's admin (192.168.0.1).

Under 'Security options' choose WPA-PSK (You could also use WEP - it is less secure but still better than nothing, just in case some of your laptops do not support WPA-PSK. If they are Win XP, they do)

In the box that appears, enter the network password you want to use. The longer it is, the more secure it is. It can be up to 63 characters long, so could be a phrase (with no spaces), not just a word. Include numbers if you can. Remember this password, as you will need it later.

Click 'Apply' and your router will probably want to restart.

When it has, try logging on from your wireless laptop. It should now ask for the network key you just set, which you will have to enter twice.

For extra security, untick 'Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)' - this will effectively make your network invisible to anyone else apart from you.

if you click on your wireless network icon, and view wireless network, your network should come up as security enabled wireless network (WPA), if it doesn't, then you need to setup an encryption password, and tell all your PC's, what it is.

to change router settings, use the wired PC.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • can i ask something iam using the netgear dg834pn modem/router but for the life of me i cannot get the internal laptop to work with a stronger encryption than wep.

the laptop is new but whenever i put in a stronger encryption it will not connect what so ever.
  • albertross i tried that guide m8 and all it did was stopped my internal connection, ive had to use my netgear stick and ive had to change my encryption back down to wep.

im not the best at this router lark.
