DLA..What else can I claim?

Since I posted yesterday, I've had a few people PM me and ask what else can they claim, so I've listed it all here.

1) If you already have a car, you should apply for your free tax disc. There should have been a green form with your award, if not, ring the DWP and ask for it. This you send off or take to the local DVLA office with your log book, insurance and MOT. They will issue you with a new tax disc for a year, then you can send the old one back and claim a refund.
You also get a form to use next year, so you can renew at the Post Office.

2) With high rate mobility you automatically qualify for a Blue Badge. Ring your local council for the form. You have to send a photo and £2 this lasts for three years.

3)You may be able to claim a free bus pass, I could. Again, ask your local council.

4) You can apply for a cinema card. Go to www.ceacard.co.uk and print off the form. You send a photo and £5. It lasts for 3 years, and means that you can take a "carer" with you to the cinema, so basically it's two for the price of one.

5) You can also get a Disabled Railcard if you travel on the train a lot. This costs £18 for one year or £48 for three years. Go to www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk to get the form.

6) You can apply for a Warmfront grant to get Cavity Wall Insulation and loft insulation done. They also give you energy saving lightbulbs, and if your boiler breaks, you may be entitled to a new one.

7) Some Councils give grants for home repairs (Ours does), so if you need some repairs done, check out if you can claim.

8)If you need any adaptions to your home because of your disabliity, you can get a Disabled Facilities Grant to cover things like stair-lifts, adapting a bathroom or installing a downstairs toilet. You have to be referred by your OT or GP, but it may be worth it if you need something that you can't afford.

And finally.. Access to Work via your local Jobcentre will check out your workplace for you and suggest adaptions needed to do your job. They will also pay for special chairs, computers etc. If you find that you can no longer drive to work, they can organise and pay for taxi's instead.

That's all I can remember, I don't think I've forgotton anything!

Hope it helps someone.

Excellent post! Just one point I think you can only claim car tax if you are in receipt of mobility component. My DD receives high rate care component but is not in receipt of mobility as she is too young and we cannot get free car tax.
  • if you look after someone who gets DLA then you can claim carers allowance.
if you have a child who gets DLA you can get extra payment on CTC.
if you have a blue badge you can get a radar key that opens disabled toilets, you can get these keys from your town council
    Another day another R&R

does anyone know if you get the car tax back even with the lowest mobility level?

does it have to be on your own car or the one you travel in all the time if you cannot drive eg. partner's/spouse
  • My daughter is only 12 so the car is for her but i drive it, we get free tax. she gets high rate mobility so i am not sure if you get the tax with low rate.

You need to be claiming middle or high rate care compoment for your carer to claim carers allowance. The carer must also be doing 35 hours or more a week of caring, and earn less than £84 (i think, not too sure on this one) per week.

You dont need a bb for a radar key, husband is incontinent and has a card from a charity called Incontact to allow him to use a toilet in any public place. I keep forgetting to get a radar key for him but he would probably never use it anyway.:o

You dont even need to be getting dla to get a bb or a bus pass, my dad got his bb&bus pass before his dla was awarded. He just needed a letter from his gp to confirm his disability to social services.

You need to get High Rate Mobility to get a car - the minimum period of award needs to be a year (used to be 3 years), but you will have to take over the payments if your DLA gets stopped halfway through the lease.

Car tax can be paid (subject to conditions) if you get High Rate Mobility.

You need a BR404 from DLA unit in order to tax the car with a disabled disc.

If you have a Motability car now, they hang on to the "log book" and send you the tax disc through the post.

Bus passes/cheap rail travel are usually automatic if you get High Rate Mob.

Blue Badges are automatic with HR, but can be applied for via a doctor's referral.

Radar keys can get obtained easily - google RADAR and you can order them on line.

    Hi everyone,
Sorry about forgetting the Radar key, I've got one myself so I shouldn't have forgotten!
And sorry to have forgotten to put you need the High Rate for free tax. I didn't know about the child carers bit, as it's me who has claimed this stuff. (I've got MS) and not a child.
Anyway, glad it was a useful post!
