Hey guys.
I have a male kitten who is around 6 months old. He is in general good health, eats and drinks well. I have noticed though that his nose gets a little scabby/black gunk at times. I mentioned it to the vet when I took him for his jags and he didn't seem concerned. He sometimes gets gunk in corner of eyes but just like us humans do too, it is never crusty/watery or sore looking.
Any advice to what this could be? His nose is light coloured and he is a black and white cat.

some cats get tear eye stains which can go onto nose, its a reddish colour ?
my persian has it and her eyes and nose get the red/brown gunk on so i use a warm cotton pad to wipe it off daily.
its more common in flat face breeds of cats and dogs but its possible its the same thing if your vet seems unconcerned?***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
This is not unusual, it's just like hardened snot really (apologies if you are eating your dinner :rotfl:). Only one of mine really gets it, Lulabelle, the snow Bengal. I just gently remove it with a cotton wool pad soaked in warm water. She also gets more gunky eyes than the others as well.0

My older cat suffers with a scabby nose....... it's normally a sign for us that his claws need trimming.
He also gets snotty (never known a cat like it) at which point, we put him in his travel basket near a bowl of vicks n hot water...... works a treat and he (weirdly) seems to quite like it.0 -
Does puss eat from plastic bowls?...as some cats get a kind of acne from the plastic.0

My eldest cat is always immaculate and always has been, but the kitten (nearly an adult now) gets sleep in his eyes and that gunk you describe in his nose. It's getting slightly better as he's getting older and is learning he needs to wash himself! I just gently clean it for him when he comes to sleep on me, it's easie when he's half asleep and doesn't realise he's being cleaned.Avon Lady since 2009 - I help on the Avon hints & tips thread to help other reps/new sales leaders as I was helped so much by it when I first started out :A0

He does yes, what do you think I should get instead, ceramic or glass or metal?
I had a cat at my parents house and her nose was a black nose and always kind of moist so not used to this. His nose is gunky but looks scabby at the corners sometimes. I wiped the gunk with a baby wipe but he resists.0 -
ps, I have never trimmed his claws. My cat at my parents never had her claws trimmed but she went outdoors from time to time. My cat is an indoors cat and doesn't really use his scratching post, well he does play with it and knock it over fighting with it but he doesn't use it to scratch. Is it okay to trim by myself or should that be done at the vets?0

My kittens used to get this too, but I think theirs was from the wet food rather than snot. They were just too busy to clean their little faces properly after dinner, they all grew out of it though and are immaculate now, except my old ginger who has started to get it again from time to time, he's just too busy sleeping for all that cleaning malarkyAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

My dear Teddy - now departed from this life - used to get a bit of black build up around his nostrils. I asked the vet and he said there was nothing there to worry about, and just clean it off for the sake of Teddy looking gorgeous. So that's what I did....I used to use my nail to just sort of dislodge it and take away. Teddy would wait for me to do it as it seemed to be a bit annoying for him have a snotty nose. I know I sound minging, but there ya go!0

You can trim cats' claws yourself but I would recommend that you buy a pet claw trimmer and that you get someone who knows what they're doing to show you before you do the job yourself. You only need to trim the very tips and make sure you steer clear of the quick.0
